First Hate Mail? Awesome.

I was checking my email today and you wouldn’t believe what I found. Looks like I have a fan:

“Hi, I noticed the link to your blog via vampirefreaks and I just want to say I think your views are ridiculous. Whats all this “society wants you to hate yourself” shit? Is it societies fault that beautiful women exist and they’re the ones we use in advertisement? Models are models because they’re attractive. It’s not the supermodels faults that they’re hot and it’s not men’s fault for thinking they’re hot. Your probably some fat lesbian or otherwise just ugly and mad about it. Hot is hot. Get over it. “

Okay, so I’m going to begin by pointing out that your email contains some grammatical errors. “Your” should be “you’re” and “societies” needs to be “society’s”.

Now that we have that covered, you are an idiot. It’s not arguable that cosmetic companies constantly target young girls and attempt to sell them products to correct their “flaws” by making them despise themselves, and that clothing lines and other companies like Playboy feature heavily edited pictures of a small percentage of hand-selected women (many of them who have had plastic surgery) representing what girls should aim to be, which is nothing more than a sex symbol. Attractive is subjective, but we as a society have made it objective for the sake of making money. It’s people like you who destroy my hope for humanity.

Oh, and to be clear, I am neither a “fat lesbian” (which by the way is an extremely hateful term), nor am I “ugly” or “mad” about my personal appearance whatsoever.

Here, I’ll prove it:

American Eagle’s “Real Beauty” Campaign

American Eagle’s “Real Beauty” Campaign

The above link will direct you to an article about American Eagle and their decision to stop photo shopping their models.

Now, I’m not so impressed. This company has decided to use “real women” for their advertisements, but these don’t look like real women to me. You’re not going to get me to purchase your underwear by not airbrushing skin and leaving a mole or two. The girls they use for their ads are still models. They still spend three hours in hair and makeup. These are not the women that we see in our everyday lives, and I think presenting them as “what real girls look like” is not only ridiculous but insulting. No matter how many “flaws” you leave on the models in your photos, it’s still almost impossible for me to find a 32A sized bra in your stores.

Gender Rolls In Highschool

Gender Rolls In Highschool

This is an article written by a teenage girl about her high school principal using the phrases “modest is hottest” and “boys will be boys” when referring to dress code. I thought this was really cool. Tell me what you guys think.

Actually, this reminds me of when I was in high school. We were supposed to be a progressive school, and to a certain extent we were. We had many LBGT members in our staff, had a social justice class, and were encouraged to treat people of all races and sexual orientation equally. However, our dress code was still mostly directed at girls. We weren’t allowed to wear spaghetti strap tank tops because boys might become aroused and distracted by our bra straps….our bra straps. One of the female staff members also explained to us that breaking the dress code would make our male teachers uncomfortable. As a sixteen year-old girl, it made ME uncomfortable to know that my male teachers were looking at me sexually. Is it okay to restrict the way women dress because “men are sexually uncontrollable”? Men are not sexually uncontrollable. They have been taught that sexual harassment is okay because they’re men and they “can’t help it”.

3 Natural Ways to Moisturize

1. Eat food rich in omega-3.

These antioxidants protect your skin from UV damage while moisturizing it. Try adding walnuts, olives, and almonds to your diet.

2. Drink plenty of water.

Water is the most important nutrient for your body, and drinking plenty of it will keep your skin healthy. You should be drinking about eight 8-oz glasses a day.

3. Use buttermilk.

Buttermilk contains lactic acid, which removes dry, dead skin cells. Just soak a cloth in cold buttermilk and lay it on your face for 5 minutes or so, then rinse gently.

Having a Bad Week?

Having a Bad Week?

Spoil yourself a little. Call up a friend. Make some hot beverages and a healthy snack.

There was a time when I was going through a lot and my friend came over with some starfruit, papaya, and tea, and it made my week.

Never underestimate the little things. No matter what you’re enduring, take the time to sit down, shut up about your problems for a couple hours, and appreciate the fact that you have access to luxuries like tea and exotic fruit.

Never Buy a Facial Mask Again

Guys, I’ve been slathering my face with honey for the past few weeks or so. I have been letting it set for about five minutes before using my regular facial cleanser once a day. I normally have mild acne with moderately clogged pores. Not only has my acne decreased, but I have fewer blackheads and my skin looks generally more healthy and vibrant.

Seriously, this is the most awesome discovery I’ve made in a while.

3 Natural Ways to Have Healthy Hair

1. Natural Oils

Condition with avocado, coconut, and olive oils. Apply the oil to your hair, leave it in a shower cap for 2-3 hours, and rinse it out without washing or conditioning. Make sure your hair is clean before doing this. It should leave your hair moisturized and lustrous.

2. Milk

If your hair is dry, soak it in whole milk and you should see some improvement. I normally just pour a couple cups of it on my head over the sink and let it set for about 2 hours in a cap before rinsing. Again, remember to do this when your hair is clean because you shouldn’t use shampoo or conditioner shortly afterward.

3. Eat Healthy Food

Try eating foods that are high in omega-3, like almonds, milk, tuna, and salmon (be careful to only purchase fish from the Atlantic Ocean, unless you like radiation). These foods are also good for your nails and skin. Drinking a lot of water will also keep your hair healthy.
